Passing the Torch: The History and Transition of Youth Theology Camp

In a modern youth ministry culture that frequently prioritizes entertainment over substance, the Youth Theology Camp—originally sponsored by First Baptist Church of Fenton, Missouri—stands as a powerful testament to the value of deep, doctrinal discipleship. Founded in 2002, the camp was built on a firm conviction: middle and high school students are fully capable of wrestling with, understanding, and applying complex biblical truths.

A Legacy of Deep Study in the Ozarks

For over two decades, Theology Camp has gathered rising 7th graders through graduating high school seniors for a rigorous, seminary-style week of study. To preserve a local church discipleship model, the camp has strictly maintained a group-only registration policy, requiring students to attend collectively with their local church sponsors.

The physical setting for this intensive spiritual formation has long been the Logan Valley Christian Retreat, situated on 40 secluded acres in the Ozark hills of Ellington, Missouri. Originally established by Dave and Sue Williams, the campground experienced a seamless leadership transition in 2023 when Josh and Leah Feeler were called to oversee the property. The Feelers continue to maintain a stellar, private environment where intense exposition blocks are balanced by high-energy outdoor recreation.

A cornerstone of the camp's academic success has been its commitment to top-tier exposition, frequently featuring trusted voices like Dr. Jim Orrick (author of Mere Calvinism), who has guided students through dense, book-by-book exegesis—such as a structural study of the Epistle to the Colossians under the banner, "Christ: the key to God's treasures."

A Strategic Leadership Transition

The long-standing operational heartbeat and spiritual direction of the camp have been masterfully shaped under the leadership of Terry A. Coker, serving as the Associate Pastor and Camp Director at FBC Fenton. As Terry approaches his well-earned retirement from his ministry roles, proactive steps have been taken to secure the camp's long-term theological legacy.

We are pleased to announce that First Baptist Church of Park Hills, Missouri, under the leadership of Pastor Josh Wilson, will officially assume full leadership, operational oversight, and spiritual direction of the camp upon Terry A. Coker's retirement.

Pastor Wilson and FBC Park Hills are deeply committed to carrying this torch forward. Under their guidance, the camp will continue to serve our regional network of churches as a premier pipeline for cultivating doctrinally sound, mature young believers who love the doctrines of grace. We invite our association to join us in prayer for both FBC Fenton and FBC Park Hills during this exciting kingdom transition.
